Discovering the Roman Age
Hike in one of the most evocative fossil valleys of the Finalese, at the foot of the imposing Rocca di Corno fortress along an ancient road with evidence of the Roman period (bridges, caves and quarries). The trail begins in Verzi, just above Calvisio, and follows the ancient Iulia Augusta, opened by Augustus in 13 BC to connect the Roman municipality of Vada Sabatia (Vado Ligure) with southern Gaul. Going up the valley, one encounters 5 Roman bridges, dating back to the 1st/2nd century AD. The first is Ponte delle Fate, well preserved, then follow Ponte Sordo, almost disappeared, and Ponte Muto, clearly visible with its round arch. After this bridge at the fork you take the path on the left to continue to stay on the Roman road; here the path becomes a bit more uphill. Shortly after the fork it is possible to take a detour on the right that in about 10 minutes leads to the area of the Roman Quarries, possibly used for the construction of the Roman road. Returning to the main route, continue to the fourth bridge or Ponte dell'Acqua, which is partially buried. Going up the valley in the last section, you arrive at the place where the last bridge, Ponte di Magnone, now disappeared, should have been, continue until the trail ends in the paved road. For the return it retraces the same path backwards.
