Roman bridges in Val Ponci
- Status Open
- NR E
- Area Finalese
One of the most picturesque routes in the Finalese area that crosses the Val Ponci, where you can find the remains of as many as five Roman bridges, located in an incredible natural setting.
A journey through history via ancient evidence from the Roman period such as bridges, caves, and quarries. The trail starts from Verzi, just above Calvisio, and follows the ancient Via Iulia Augusta, opened by Augustus in 13 BC to connect the Roman town of Vada Sabatia (Vado Ligure) with southern Gaul. Going up the valley you encounter 5 Roman bridges dating back to the 1st/2nd century AD. The first is the well-preserved Ponte delle Fate, then there are Ponte Sordo, almost disappeared, and Ponte Muto, clearly visible with its semicircular arch. After this bridge, at the fork, take the trail on the left to continue staying on the Roman road; here the path in about 10 minutes leads to the Roman quarry area, perhaps used for the road construction.
Staying on the main path you reach the fourth bridge or Ponte dell’Acqua, partially buried. Going up the valley in the last stretch you reach the place where the last bridge, Ponte di Magnone, which is now gone, should be located.
