🌿Guided tour exploring the sea, local trade and maritime traditions
A guided tour to discover Laigueglia, one of the most charming seaside villages on the Ligurian Riviera, where narrow alleyways, colourful houses and ancient traditions tell the story of the deep bond between the local community and the sea.
The tour takes participants through the village’s historical evolution, highlighting the role Laigueglia played between the 16th and 17th centuries thanks to fishing and the coral trade. During this period, the village experienced a period of great economic prosperity, developing a fleet specialising in the fishing of the precious ‘red gold’ and attracting numerous families of Catalan origin, who helped shape its culture and identity.
Strolling through the narrow streets of the historic centre, we will discover traces of this seafaring past: Ligurian architecture overlooking the sea, old fishermen’s houses, picturesque views and evidence of an economy that for centuries was closely linked to the Mediterranean and the trade routes of salt and coral.
With the gradual decline of maritime activities, Laigueglia went through a period of economic hardship, which only in the 20th century gave way to a new vocation: tourism. The village managed to reinvent itself as an elegant seaside resort, whilst keeping the authentic charm of its historic layout intact.
The route runs from the heart of the historic centre to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Feathers, a symbolic and panoramic spot overlooking the village and the sea. The sanctuary, deeply rooted in the local maritime devotion, remains an important spiritual landmark for the community to this day. From its privileged position, one can enjoy a splendid view of the coast and the gulf.
The itinerary aims to illustrate the historical continuity between economic activities, urban development and cultural identity, offering an interpretation of the village that combines history, landscape and the memory of the local area.
