Carmo: the direct route
- Status Open
- Area Pietrese
From Pian delle Bosse to the summit via the east buttress
Several trails lead to the summit of Carmo: this is the most challenging but offers an open view and the presence of a large variety of alpine flora species, clinging to the dolomitic rock cliffs.
Behind the Pian delle Bosse refuge, the ridge path marked with two red squares initially runs through the forest, soon exiting it when it reaches the rocky watershed.
The open environments (rocky areas, meadows, scree), well represented here, are generally richer in flora than the dense forests; here we are on the east buttress of Monte Carmo di Loano, considered by botanists as the phytogeographic boundary between the Alps and the Apennines, because from this massif westwards typical alpine flora species are found. To name a few: the Ligurian gentian, the dusty primrose, the alpine globularia, the fritillary, the callous saxifrage with its cascade of white flowers, the bright yellow Ligurian helianthemum that wraps the rocks with its small sprawling stems.
During the ascent there are some points where you can choose whether to follow the more rugged path on the watershed blade or divert to its left; one of these deviations connects to the Amici del Carmo refuge (private and unstaffed, but with a room with tables open). Continuing along the ridge leads to the sub-summit at 1328m altitude, from where you descend to the grassy saddle before tackling the final zigzag climb to the summit at 1389m.
Here there is a large metal cross, a group of beeches for resting in the shade, and a disk marking the names and directions of the surrounding mountains as the panorama is absolutely 360 degrees!
