From Porto Venere to Riomaggiore along the Sentiero dell’Infinito: churches, castles, and breathtaking views between the sea and the vineyards, with stops in Campiglia and at the Montenero Sanctuary.
From Piazza Bastreri, you enter Porto Venere through the Torre Capitolare and walk along Calata Doria to the Church of San Pietro and the picturesque Byron Grotto. You then head up to Castello Doria (€5), which overlooks the village with spectacular views of the sea and Palmaria Island. The “Sentiero dell’Infinito” trail starts behind the castle and stretches about 12 km to Riomaggiore; it’s particularly challenging during the first section of stairways through the Mediterranean scrub. After 2 hours, you’ll reach Campiglia (400 m above sea level), which has bars and grocery stores—perfect for a scenic break. From here, the trail climbs to Colle del Telegrafo (516 m), the highest point of the route, offering views of the Gulf of La Spezia. Continue along the Via dei Santuari to the Montenero Sanctuary, where the view stretches all the way to Corsica. A descent through vineyards finally leads to Riomaggiore, with its castle dating back to 1260 and virtual reality tours. Recommended overnight stays in Riomaggiore, La Spezia, or Corniglia.
