The cork oak grove of Bergeggi
- Status Open
- Area Levante
The largest cork oak forest in the western Liguria
The cork oak grove immerses you in a forest where time thins out and gives way to imagination. Reaching it is very easy: near the municipal office, via Luccoli leads to a wonderful mixed forest of downy oaks and holm oaks. Just follow the main path to find yourself immersed in the silence and freshness of the cork oaks (some are 10 m tall with a trunk diameter of about 40 cm). Picnic tables invite you to stop and imagine fishermen around who collect cork for making fishing floats.
Upon reaching the dirt road, go left up the path that enters the cork oak grove. You immediately notice that the trunks are blackened and the undergrowth is sparse: a large fire affected part of the cork oak grove in 2017. Here lies the importance of cork! An excellent fire-resistant material that saved all the cork oaks by protecting the vital part of the plant.
In the undergrowth, however, the strength of life is evident: the bushes with blackened fire branches are sprouting and will soon bring back a lush undergrowth.
At the top of the path, pass the barrier, go downhill on the asphalt road for about 200 m, take the dirt road on the right and, flanking the cork oak grove and passing the Battery, you quickly return to the entrance of the inner path.
What is seen today is probably what remains of a once larger ancient forest: wandering around, in fact, solitary specimens mixed with maritime pines can still be found.
