Val di Nava circular route
- Status Open
- Area Finalese
Boragni, a characteristic village in one of the most beautiful valleys of the Finalese.
A very easy and panoramic circular route characterized by many ups and downs. It crosses one of the most beautiful and wild valleys of the Finalese, the Val di Nava, then climbs the ridge that separates it from the Val Cornei, reaching the settlement of Orco Feglino.
The route starts with a visit to the beautiful fortified village of Boragni built by local peasants to protect themselves from Saracen raids that often caused looting and violence even in the inner hinterland. It is a group of houses arranged in a circle and leaning against each other, with some small openings to the outside equipped with bars, enclosing small well-protected open spaces used as gardens or courtyards. Very suggestive is the stone vaulted covered passage that crosses the village and represented a safe internal communication route for the inhabitants.
The route is made even more interesting as it includes visits to two caves: the Strapatente Cave and the Balconi Cave.
Located beneath the large white cliff called Bastionata di Boragni, the Strapatente cave is a natural gallery dating back to the Miocene period, inside which you are surrounded by numerous stalactites and stalagmites as well as fully formed columns.
Above the north entrance of the cave is the Strapatente Dolmen, a megalithic structure dating back to the Bronze Age, consisting of a large horizontal slab of Pietra del Finale resting on five smaller stones. The horizontal surface has two communicating basins, probably cup marks for collecting liquid for ritual purposes. It is not excluded that the dolmen could also have been used as an astronomical observatory given its orientation along the meridian axis.
At the southern exit there is a beautiful view over the green and wild Val di Nava, and continuing the path you reach the suggestive Balconi Cave, almost a natural arch marked by dry stone walls.
