Val Maremola’s Terre Alte

Status Closed

From Cà dell’Erscia to Bric Tampa

In Cà dell'Erscia (Magliolo), the few scattered farmhouses mark the beginning of the wild and charming woods. This route used to run where people historically were getting their hay supply.

This section of "Terre Alte" (look for red and yellow signposts) begins with a dirt road that wedges into the Rianazzo valley, gradually narrowing and becoming a trail while passing under the Balzi Rossi coast and in the chestnut groves of "Ravin".

A steep slope will take you down to cross the Lavazzè river right where the river creates a pond with a lovely waterfall. Make sure you take a nice and refreshing break!

Now the trail becomes more challenging, as you go up the other slope to regain lost elevation and get around a rocky ridge: here you will find a spring.

Now you should come across many charcoal farmyards, where people used to make charcoal piles to transform wood into coal, which was lighter to transport.

Although during the last century people travelled this route even twice a day with the help of their mules to transport hay, ensuring their supply for the winter, this stretch of the trail is considered rather tough now. Hay was once obtained from large meadows that have now almost disappeared, being recolonized by the woods.

When the path finally joins a dirt road, you will have almost reached your destination: a detour to the left leads slightly downhill to Bric Tampa’s picnic area. Once here, just lean out from the rocks among the trees and you will see Cà dell’Erscia.

Be well equipped

Think about the duration and type of hike: what could you need? Waterproof clothing? Sun protection? Water? Appropriate footwear? For example, if you are thinking of visiting the caves or hiking to the top of a mountain, it might be a smart idea to dress in layers… even in summer!

Bear in mind, don’t hog climbing routes, clean up chalk off holds after using them and don’t scatter your things around. It’s always a good idea to gather your belongings in one place.

If you are training on a pitch, use your own HMS

If you are training on a pitch and repeating it several times, it is best to use an HMS-type carabiner instead of threading it directly into the maillon to avoid its wear and tear.

Rappeling

Rappeling

In the “finalese” crags you rarely find fixed carabiners, therefore you’ll have to be able to do a particular type of rappel to lower off.

Wear a wetsuit or a t-shirt for water activities

Even in summer, it’s always best to wear a wetsuit or a t-shirt: they protect you from the sun, avoid the risk of hypothermia on longer outings and can be of great help in case of jellyfish.
