Palmaria Island and the Port of Venere
- Status Closed
Porto Venere and Palmaria Island, with their forts and towers, followed by the Church of San Pietro, Byron’s Grotto, and Doria Castle: history, panoramic views, and culture along the coast of the Gulf of Poets.
From Calata Doria, a boat takes you to Palmaria Island (schedules and fares available online), which features fortifications from various eras. The “Giro dell’Isola” tour departs from Terrizzo: the first stop is the Umberto I Fortified Tower, overlooking Torre Scola, and the Strada del Pozzale, which runs alongside the Schenello-Albini Battery to the picturesque Cala del Pozzale. You then reach the Semaforo Battery, which was once used to defend against Turkish pirates and served as a semaphore and marine weather station until 1962. Back at the fork, continue on to Forte Cavour, one of the most imposing defensive complexes, connected to the “Strada dei Condannati,” which leads back to Terrizzo to return by boat. In Porto Venere, along Calata Doria, visit the Church of San Pietro and Byron’s Grotto, then Doria Castle (€5) with its spectacular view and the nearby cemetery where Walter Bonatti is buried. Finally, among the narrow alleys of the village, you’ll discover the Romanesque Church of San Lorenzo and the Torre Capitolare, which has watched over the entrance to the village since the 12th century.
