⏱️Journey through the history
- Pope Pius VII
In February 1814, Pope Pius VII stopped in Spotorno during the journey that brought him back from Savona to Rome, after the years of imprisonment imposed by Napoleon. A visit destined to enter the history of the country, still remembered today as one of the most significant episodes in the collective memory of the Spontornese.
- The kilns and lime production
For centuries Spotorno was an important centre for stone mining and lime production. The quarries, kilns, and work of generations of men shaped the landscape and contributed to the economic development of the village, leaving traces that are still recognizable today.
- The Port of Spotorno
Before the rise of tourism, the sea was the community's main resource. The port was a lively centre of trade and maritime traffic, the starting point for locally built vessels and a meeting place between Mediterranean peoples, goods and cultures.
- The Transylvania Shipwreck
On 4 May 1917, the British ocean liner Transylvania, used to transport troops during the First World War, was torpedoed off Cape Vado. The people of Spotorno participated with extraordinary courage in the rescue operations, offering assistance to survivors and writing one of the noblest pages in local history, still a symbol of solidarity and humanity today.
