FORNACI della val Ponci
A long but easy route, suitable for everyone. We come across a furnace straight away, and many people know it. For the other two, hidden in the woods, you need to be patient and first cross four Roman bridges and pass three Pietra del Finale quarries that look like caves. At the end, we check how long it has taken us and decide whether to retrace our steps or head off to see the Ciappo del Sale on the ridge of the Rocca degli Uccelli.
Location and times:
Meet at 2.45 pm in Calvisio in Piazza della Resistenza (Tpl bus stop, line 31), carpool and travel to the climbing car park at the start of Val Ponci (flat dirt track), estimated return to Calvisio by 7.30 pm. In the event of bad weather, the hike may be postponed to Sunday morning or the following week.
Technical details:
Duration: 4.5 hours, including breaks
Distance: approx. 8 km
Elevation gain: 140 m (240 m if we go via Ciappo del Sale)
Difficulty: moderate hiking (E)
Essentials: trainers or hiking/trail shoes, comfortable layered clothing suitable for walking, walking poles for those accustomed to using them, water, snacks if required.

Cost and registration:
Free excursion for members of the “La Fornace” Association (annual membership fee €10 – contact Giacomo Nervi on 333 1933968 for further information).
For non-members, there is a charge for the excursion – cost: €15 per person (discount available for families with children). Payment in cash on the day.
