IL FINALESE: TRA FALESIE, GROTTE E ANTICHI PERCORSI
Few places in Liguria are able to amaze hikers and trekking enthusiasts as much as the Finalese. While the area is best known for its coastline, with Varigotti as its undisputed jewel, the wonders of the inland landscape often remain unknown to most visitors.
Yet, just behind the medieval gem of Finalborgo, immersed in the Mediterranean scrub, lies a surprising and truly unique natural setting: the Pietra di Finale area. This striking limestone massif, rich in fossils, bears witness to the presence of an ancient shallow sea with warm waters. Over millions of years, rainwater has shaped the rock, carving out deep ravines, tunnels piercing through the mountain, and imposing vertical walls rising up to 200 meters.
A dense network of trails, largely untouched by mass tourism, allows the more adventurous hikers to access this maze of geological wonders, offering safe viewpoints over the entrances of the caves (while, of course, leaving their exploration solely to speleologists).
Our circular itinerary will lead us to two of the most remarkable sites in the area: the Grotta dell’Edera – a vast open-air rocky cylinder, 35 meters high and 20 meters wide, whose walls attract climbers from all over the world – and the Grotta della Pollera, famous for its dramatic entrance framed by a rock arch on the side wall.
Along the route—once an ancient connection between the sea and the Po Valley—we will retrace events of great historical significance, still visible today in ancient castles, Romanesque churches, and a remarkably well-preserved Byzantine castrum.
A journey back in time, following in the footsteps of merchants, stonecutters, military garrisons, and even a young empress on her wedding procession.
