TREKKING ANCIENT VIE DEL SALE: ORTOVERO - VENDONE ON FOOT AMONG IMPOSING SCULPTURES
🌿A fascinating circular walk exploring the Arroscia Valley, one of Liguria’s most important wine-growing regions, where the rural landscape, ancient agricultural traditions and contemporary art come together in a setting of extraordinary beauty.

The hike starts from Ortovero, a village nestled amongst vineyards, fruit trees and crops that characterise this fertile inland area of Liguria. This is where some of the region’s most renowned wines are produced, such as Pigato, Vermentino and Ormeasco DOC, an authentic expression of an agricultural culture that has shaped the landscape for centuries.
- Walking along ancient connecting roads and scenic paths, we will reach the charming Baroque oratory of San Giovanni and, after passing the hamlet of Villa, we will arrive at the fortified village of Pogli, where numerous towers are still visible, bearing witness to the valley’s medieval past and the strategic importance of these ancient routes.
- As we enter the territory of Vendone, the landscape is enriched by an unexpected and surprising presence: in the hamlet of Castellaro, we shall encounter the monumental sculptures of Reiner Kriester, a German artist who created a veritable open-air museum here. The large white-pink stelae, decorated with geometric symbols and stylised faces, emerge from the landscape like mysterious archaic presences, creating an evocative dialogue between contemporary art and nature.
- The return journey to Ortovero will take us through cultivated fields, olive groves and vineyards that still bear witness today to the agricultural history of the Arroscia Valley and the deep bond between man and the land.
